The story of Pouran Nafisi, " the lady who saved me from my hostage situation with two hired guns," which I describe in my story.... by Brian H. Appleton
Back in June, I was contacted by a lady in Los Angeles who had reason to believe that the Pouran Nafisi, I describe in my story, was the mother of her best friend Hormoz, who had been separated from her at 8 months by a divorce and raised by his grand parents in Los Angeles. He wanted to talk to me and it turns out he asked me to help him find his mother purely for emotional needs as his grandparents had passed away and he was quite estranged from his father.
I asked him what he remembered about his mom that his grandparents may have told him. He said that they had told him about his half sister who had been taken to Madrid, Spain for eye surgery at a very young age. Once I heard that, I knew that he was Pouran’s son as I had been the one to suggest to Pouran that she take her daughter to Dr. Ramon Castroviejo, who was a world famous eye surgeon at the time for having invented the corneal transplant. I knew about him as his children had gone to school with me in Rome.
I did not know that Pouran had a son as she never spoke of him. Now I was also highly motivated to find her. I asked my friend Fatema Soudavar in London, if she knew Pouran Nafisi. It turns out she had met her only once at a party at Fatema’s house in which some prankster guests had thrown Pouran into the pool with her clothes on and Fatema had provided her with dry ones. She did remember that Pouran was related to court minister Alam and that he had two nieces in London who might know Pouran’s disposition. They were on vacation however in Portugal. Then Pouran remembered a mutual friend now Lady Renwick. She called her and Lady Renwick had all the information we were looking for.
Pouran had passed away seven years ago of heart failure but she was survived not by one daughter and one son but by two daughters and one son. She had an older daughter named Mana who was also raised by her grandparents as a result of another divorce. In fact Pouran had been divorced seven times all together and each child had been by a different husband. The younger daughter Arian was the only one she raised herself.
To make a long story short on the seventh anniversary of her death June 22nd, I had managed to get Hormoz phone numbers for his two half sisters in Tehran and they spoke. They were thrilled to be united with their long lost brother and they were greatful to me although all the credit goes to Fatema.
Arian had become a sculptor and is happily married with a beautiful two year old son and Mana is a medical doctor. Hormoz served in the US Navy on nuclear submarines and now works for the Health and Human Services Department of Washington State.
